As well as being a puppeteer, Matt is an Assistant Professor with over a decade of experience as a qualitative researcher, specialising in thematic analysis. Bringing together his expertise in research and pedagogy alongside his artistic practice, Matt delivers specialist training workshops in qualitative methods, guiding participants through the "craft" of thematic analysis.
Thematic Analysis Masterclass
Half-day to full-day workshops where participants are introduced to the key principles of thematic analysis through hands-on practical exercises. Participants can work with their own data, use workshop datasets or generate data during the session itself. Matt can also review data in advance and support participants to begin identifying codes and themes within their own projects.
AI & the "craft" of Thematic Analysis
Matt also delivers workshops that critically explore the use of AI tools in qualitative analysis, examining how large language models (LLMs) work, considering where might they serve the craft, and where might they compromise it.
Drawing on his work as a puppeteer Matt frames thematic analysis as a craft: what may start as rules to follow becomes, over time, a set of guiding principles that shape your own analytic practice.
As part of the training activities a puppetry performance as a creative lens and discussion point around the analytic process.
