As well as being a puppeteer, Matt is an Assistant Professor with over a decade of experience as a qualitative researcher, specialising in thematic analysis. Bringing together his expertise in research and pedagogy alongside his artistic practice, Matt delivers specialist training workshops in qualitative methods, guiding participants through the "craft" of thematic analysis.

Thematic Analysis Masterclass
Half-day to full-day workshops where participants are introduced to the key principles of thematic analysis through hands-on practical exercises. Matt can provide some real world workshop data to work through, generate some data in the session itself, or if participants are currently working on a research project they can send data for him to look over ahead of time, & help them (start!) to identify codes & themes.​

AI & the "craft" of Thematic Analysis
Matt also delivers workshops that critically explore the use of AI tools in qualitative analysis, examining how large language models (LLMs) work, considering where might they serve the craft, and where might they compromise it.​​​​
In relating the process of analysis to his craft as a puppeteer, Matt is always happy to provide a puppetry performance as part of the day.​​
